A proposal after 180 days apart
The ring goes in before either of them leaves. It waits through the whole posting, and the question is asked by the object before anyone has to say it out loud.
Bringing two moments closer.
Carving the story — 0%
A handcrafted kinetic love story
Choose a future date. Two hand-carved figures move toward one another each day. When they finally meet, a hidden gift is revealed.
Only 99 will ever be made
It begins with distance.
Over ninety days, the two figures move from opposite ends of the track to the centre, roughly one millimetre closer each day.
Every part, and what it is for
Glass Dome
Protects the story within.
01 / 10
The piece separates into 10 parts: Glass Dome — Protects the story within. Hand-Carved Figures — Made individually by hand. The Heart — The place where their paths meet. Movement Platform — The ground they cross. Time Track — Calibrated to the chosen date. Movement Mechanism — Advances the figures each day. Structural Base — Turned from a single section. Hidden Drawer — Locked until the final moment. Timing Compartment — Set once, then left alone. Edition Number — One of only ninety-nine.
Set a start and an ending. The piece behind you moves to match. Drag along the timeline to see any day of the journey.
The earliest we could realistically deliver for.
Between 30 days and three years.
Day 01 of 90
Their story begins.
The full distance is still between them.
This is a demonstration of how the piece behaves. The final travel per day is measured and set on the bench when your piece is calibrated, against the date you confirm with the studio.
And then, the waiting becomes a memory.
Each CLOSER No. 99 is carved, assembled, calibrated, finished and tested by hand. Natural variation in the grain and in the carving makes every piece unmistakably individual.
Where a machine does a job better than a hand, we use one and say so. What you are buying is not the absence of machines. It is the presence of a person.
A piece is chosen for figure and for how it will look in ten years, not for how it photographs today.
Roughed out, then taken down slowly. The last two millimetres are where a figure becomes a person.
The drum and deck are turned as one set so the grain runs continuously around the piece.
Two curved slots, cut and cleaned by hand until a carriage runs the whole length without catching.
Gear, racks and pins are set, then run through a full cycle at speed before they are ever set to a date.
Four coats of hard-wax oil, cut back between each. Satin, never gloss — this is an object to be handled.
Cut into brass, let into the front of the base, and written into the certificate at the same moment.
The travel is set to your date and the piece is run and checked before the dome goes on for the last time.
Everything below changes the piece behind these words. The engraving preview is live — type into it and watch the plate.
Working in a species not listed here is sometimes possible. Ask the studio before you reserve, not after.
The first edition is the original two figures of the drawing. Other arrangements are something we want to make properly rather than quickly, so they are not offered yet — write to the studio if that is what you are looking for.
Cut into the brass above the drawer. Visible every day.
Cut into the underside. Found later, usually by someone else.
We will place, photograph and seal a letter or flat keepsake before the piece ships. For a ring, we would rather you did it yourself.
Country or city is enough for now.
Recommended, and included on every piece by default.
Your piece, so far
Build time
6–9 weeks from design approval.
Reserving today, a piece would be finished between 11 September 2026 and 2 October 2026.
Before the countdown begins, place something meaningful inside. The drawer keeps it hidden until the day the two figures meet.
The compartment measures roughly 11 cm wide, 7 cm deep and 3.2 cm high. We would rather tell you what does not fit than have you find out on the day.
Print at 100%, write, fold along the three lines. It comes out at 10 × 6.5 cm and it will fit.
Optional
Send your gift to the studio.
If you will not be in the room when the piece is set up, we will place a letter or a flat keepsake inside, photograph it where it sits, and seal the piece before it ships. For a ring, or anything you could not replace, we would rather you did it yourself — we do not want to be the reason it is somewhere else on the day.
Only 99 pieces of the first CLOSER edition will be created. Each is numbered, documented, and accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity.

CLOSER Studio
“I wanted to create an object that did not simply represent love, but physically moved through it. CLOSER turns waiting into something visible. Every day leaves the two figures with a little less distance between them.”
Most of what we are told about love is about the moment it arrives. Very little of it is about the part in between — the months of being in two cities, the year before the wedding, the posting that will end eventually. That part is longer, and it is mostly invisible. This is an attempt to make it visible, one millimetre at a time.
Ninety-nine pieces, carved in a series, each one calibrated to a date that means something to somebody I will probably never meet. That seems like enough.
Signed on every certificate, by hand
Dark wood, ivory paper, blind embossing, and as little branding as we could get away with. The box is made in the same workshop, from the same species, and it is designed to be kept rather than recycled.
Final dimensions and mechanism specifications may vary slightly, as each piece is made and calibrated by hand.
Choose a number from those still unclaimed. It is held for you the moment payment confirms.
An anniversary, a homecoming, a wedding, a Tuesday that only means something to two people.
Wood, figures, the line on the plaque and the line inside. We send drawings before anything is cut.
Six to nine weeks. You will get photographs at the carving stage and again before it is boxed.
Lift the dome, put something true in the drawer, set the days, and leave it alone.
Typical production — 6 to 9 weeks
Once your piece is under way you will have a private page showing exactly where it is. If a date moves, you will hear it from us before you notice it there.
Handcrafted kinetic love sculpture. One of ninety-nine.
Payment
Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, handled by Stripe. The studio never sees your card details.
Shipping
Insured and tracked worldwide. Duties and taxes are calculated at checkout for your destination.
Returns
A commissioned piece is carved and calibrated for one date, so it cannot be resold. The deposit is refundable in full within 14 days of reserving, before cutting begins. After that it is not. If something arrives damaged or wrong, that is ours to put right, always.
Production
6–9 weeks from design approval. We will tell you if that changes before you have to ask.

This secures your edition number and begins the commission. It is credited in full against the balance, which the studio confirms with you once the design is agreed. We do not publish a final figure until we can stand behind it.

A number is held for 30 minutes while you pay. If payment is not completed, it returns to the grid automatically.
The ring goes in before either of them leaves. It waits through the whole posting, and the question is asked by the object before anyone has to say it out loud.
Set on the day they married, ending on the day they will have been married another year. The gap closes across a whole ordinary twelve months of ordinary evenings.
One piece, in one flat, moving toward a date already booked. The other person watches it over a video call, a little further along every time.
Written now, while it is still true, and not read until a day chosen years ahead. Some things are worth saying early and hearing late.
We have not printed customer testimonials here, because we do not have any yet. When we do, and when the people who wrote them are happy for us to, they will replace this section. Until then it seemed better to show you what the piece is for than to invent somebody who loved it.
Where something is still being worked out, it says so. We would rather lose a sale than describe a feature that does not exist yet.
Each figure stands on a small carriage held in a curved slot cut into the deck. Below, a central gear drives two toothed racks — one to each side — so both carriages are drawn inward by exactly the same amount. The movement advances once a day and then rests. You will not see it happen; you will only see that it has.
The track is 46 mm long on each side, so 92 mm of distance closes between them. We divide that by the number of days you choose and set the mechanism to advance by that amount. Ninety days works out at almost exactly one millimetre a day, which is where the piece takes its name. A longer commission moves more slowly; a shorter one moves further each day.
Yes, but not invisibly. The control on the back of the base lets the movement be reset and recalibrated to a new duration, which returns the figures to their starting positions. There is no way to nudge a date by a few days without starting the journey again — the piece keeps one promise at a time.
The figures stop where they are. Nothing is lost and nothing resets. Replace the cell through the hatch on the back, set the number of days already elapsed, and the movement picks up from that point. We size the cell for well beyond a single commission, and we will tell you what it is so you can buy one anywhere.
This is what we are working on now. Resetting for a second commission is straightforward; what we are still refining is whether the drawer can be re-locked at home or whether it needs to come back to the studio. Until that is settled we would rather you bought this as a piece that keeps one date beautifully than as one that promises to keep every date.
No. It unlocks. A brass pin withdraws as the figures complete their travel, and from that moment the drawer can be drawn out by hand. Nothing springs open and nothing announces itself — the piece simply stops holding the drawer shut.
The compartment is about 11 cm wide, 7 cm deep and 3.2 cm high. A folded letter, a ring in a slim box, a photograph, a necklace, a key, a small keepsake. A standard hinged ring box will not fit; a slim one will. There is a folding template further up this page so you can check a letter before you commission.
Not without dismantling the base, which we would rather you did not do. The lock is mechanical and it is genuinely a lock. That is the entire point of it.
We offer this, and we are still building the part of it we are confident in. Letters and flat keepsakes we will place, photograph and seal before the piece ships. For anything of real value — a ring in particular — we currently ask that you place it yourself, because we would rather not be the reason it is somewhere else on the day.
Within what can honestly be carved by hand and repeated: hair length and shape, the silhouette of the clothing, and whether the arms rest or reach. Wood species changes their colour. We do not offer likenesses. The figures are meant to be two people, not two particular people, so that the piece still means something in thirty years.
The figures, the heart and the finishing are carved and worked by hand. The base and deck are turned, and the brass fittings and the movement are made to tolerance — you cannot hand-whittle a gear that has to be right for a year. Where a machine does the job better we say so. What you are buying is not the absence of machines; it is the presence of a person.
Six to nine weeks from the point the design is approved, depending on where the piece sits in the queue and how the wood behaves. If we are running behind, you will hear it from us before you have to ask.
No, and it is not meant to. The grain is different in every board, and a carved figure carries the hand that carved it. Two pieces sitting side by side will read as the same object and as obviously separate objects. Photographs on this site show the design, not your piece.
The dome travels separately from the base, in its own moulded cradle inside the outer case, and the figures are held in transit blocks so nothing loads the mechanism. Every piece ships insured, and the packaging is designed to be kept — you will want it if you ever move house.
Yes, from whatever is still unclaimed. Numbers are held while you complete payment and released again if it is not finished. Once your payment confirms, that number is yours and it leaves the list permanently.
Not of this edition. Ninety-nine pieces, numbered 01 to 99, and then the edition closes. If the studio makes another kinetic piece one day it will be its own object with its own name — it will not be a hundredth of this one.
They stay met. The piece becomes an object about something that already happened rather than something still coming, which is a quieter thing to own but not a lesser one. Most of what we have made so far has stayed on the shelf it was put on.
Yes. The movement is serviceable through the back panel, the drawer and the dome are replaceable, and we keep the drawings and the offcuts of your board. Send it back and we will put it right. This is a piece meant to outlive the occasion that prompted it.
Two years on the mechanism and on the making, covering anything that fails in normal use. It does not cover a dropped dome, and it does not cover wood moving in a very dry room — though we will always advise, and usually we can help anyway.

Every day, one millimetre closer.
